What's the 4-1-1?

Formed in the summer of 2001, this LA/Orange County CA foursome found themselves bored of all the music that surrounded them so they decided to hit the studio and do their own thing. These sessions spawned the bands debut EP When the Beauty's Gone (released on their own 1605 Records) and then a constant blitzkrieg of performances all over America. After selling just under 5000 copies of their debut EP, SiX went back into their home recording/ rehearsal studio and developed the material for their next release.

Genre
Nu metal / hard rock / industrial

The Good
An altered version of the intro to Iron Maiden’s “Number of the Beast” starts things off. It’s followed by the thunderous guitar riffs of “Something’s Gotta Give”. There’s no denying that vocalist Lauren is pissed. The snarling, angry vocals are deep and harsh, but still tuneful. Lyrically, Lauren is struggling with his belief in God. Echoey vocals, meaty riffs, and electric tones rein over the high-energy track “Everything”. Heavy, muddy bass tones pound on “We All Lie” and “Sad State”. “Stranger Killer King” is a fist pounding, neck snapping, musical thrill ride. It feels like your walking down the hall of a creepy haunted house on “In My Life”. All hope of survival is lost when Lauren kicks in with his furious vocals. On some songs, on the author knows what the song is really about. “Leave Me Dry” is one of those songs. The electronic tones become more prevalent on the border line rap/rock track “Lay Back”.

The Bad
Nu-metal is a tough sell these days.

The Verdict
SiX promote themselves as a band that doesn't like to be (genre) labeled, but they're purely nu-metal. On top of the down-tuned, heavy riff based rhythms; SiX does bring some of their own little stylings to the table. They aren't exactly breaking new music ground, but they sure are improving upon it. If you think that nu-metal is stale and has past its expiration date, then you haven't heard Six yet.

Did you know?
Vocalist Lauren used to be the frontman for Drown.

Rating: out of 5
