Based out of Nebraska, rock collective Head of Femur strips down their participants
on this album to an almost-bare (for the band) sixteen people. Originally
formed by Matt Focht (guitar/vocals), Mike Elsener (guiar/vox), and Colby
Starck (drums) the band has expanded greatly since their beginnings, becoming
swelled to the gills like some sort of musical cult with members coming
and going at will, some staying only briefly. This new album is their third
album and their first after a wonderful sophomore release in 2005 on Spin-Art
Records.
The band has sort of had a modicum of success as they have toured
with Wilco and Bright Eyes. Just think about this fact: there were twenty
one musicians on the band's last album, so this is stripped down and
it sounds like it, despite the truckload of people still involved with the
album. The album is almost an ode to the band's Nebraska home as their
is a pastoral feel to the whole album and there are extra people involved,
but they are involved very subtly and the arranging on this album is
excellent.
Very good album and if you ever visit Great Plains, it's a sure bet you'll
be staying there for a little while.
