What’s the 4-1-1?
Evergrey follows-up their 2005 live CD/DVD A Night to Remember with
their sixth album.
Genre
Power metal / hard rock / metal / melodic
The Good
“Monday Morning Apocalypse” is dominated by dark chugga-chugga riffage,
rapid-fire double kick drums, and catchy, harmonic vocals. Henrik Danhage lays
down one fiery solo as well. “Unspeakable” is a pure power metal
track with a pop-rock sensibility. What I mean by that is; the lyrical arrangement
can appeal to a wide audience, and the guitars aren’t so in-your-face.
The light keyboard runs enhance the heavy guitar tones of “Obedience.” At
first, “In Remembrance” relies heavily on Ton Englund’s vocals,
but as the track progresses, the rest of the band kicks in. The lyrics are delivered
as sort-of a eulogy. The intro to “Still in the Water” helps build
tension until the faint distorted riffs arrive. The vocal delivery here is haunting
and echoed. Despite the chunky riffage on “The Dark I Walk You Through,” Englund
gives his deep vocals a touch of the blues.
The Bad
Having only heard Evergrey’s live album prior to this one, I was slightly
disappointed that they are not as symphonic as I had believed them to be.
The Verdict
Monday Morning Apocalypse is a great balance of power metal ballads and rockers,
with just the right amount of dark guitar tones and melodic vocals.
