What’s the 4-1-1?
After 10 years of recording CDs, Lana Lane embarked on an anniversary
tour to help celebrate the feat. Lana’s tour stop in Tokyo
was the backdrop for this particular performance. The DVD is presented
in 5.1 sound and comes with a bonus audio disc.
Genre
Melodic rock / symphonic rock / progressive metal
The Good
Lana Lane and Erik Norlander have always had a fondness for Japan. In fact,
they recorded their prior live albums there; so it only makes sense to return
for this historic performance. If you can survive the music industry for ten
years, that is quite the accomplishment. Lana’s goal with her set list
was to include at least one song from each of her albums (minus her cover
albums). The result is a nineteen song set that spans her recorded career
from 1995’s Love is an Illusion to 2005’s Lady Macbeth.
The instrumental
tracks “Astrology Prelude,” “LIAA Overture,” “Curious
Goods Part One,” “In the Hall of the Ocean Queen,” “The
Vision,” and “The Redemption Part One,” are used perfectly
to transition from one period of the band’s career to the next. Led
by the indulgent keyboards of Erik Norlander, the rhythm section are at their
very best during these points. Because let’s face it, when the angelic
vocals of Lana Lane come into the picture, she truly commands the show. I
love hearing this woman sing. You just don’t hear vocals like hers set
to a hard rock background too often.
There wasn’t one performance of
hers that I didn’t like, but some of my favorites were “Secrets
of Astrology,” “Souls of the Mermaids,” Romeo and Juliet,” “Nevermore,” and “Someone
to Believe”. I loved that last song from the moment I first heard it
on Lady Macbeth. Lana has such a knack for the ballads. I do have to mention
the exceptional guitar talents of Peer Verschuren and Mark McCrite. They provide
a great combination of killer riffs and killer runs.
Included on the DVD is
a video journal of the 10th Anniversary Tour. I had mixed feeling about
it. I guess you’d really have to be in the know to truly appreciate it.
As an added bonus, Lana Lane included an audio disc of the performance, although
they did have to cut out two tracks due to time limitations. If you really
want them, you can get them from their website.
The Bad
Nothing notable
The Verdict
A great time capsule for the Lana Lane legacy. Here’s to 10 more years
of beautiful melodic rock!
